A great substance for protecting almost any valued metal item is FrogLube paste, which is basically a gun-oil class grease which is food-grade and non-toxic. It also smells minty. With your own body heat or a hair dryer you can treat the blade and any part of the weapon to absorb and treat it much like an iron cooking pot absorbing oils. After a few treatments the blade will not require much to keep up the protection and it also seems to repel dust and particles while also not allowing any oxidation. Great stuff. I use it for my pump-action shotgun, 9mm semi-auto pistol, blades...and it leaves your hands soft and conditioned. :D
